DLA Piper is one of the world’s largest international law firms, employing 4,200 lawyers in more than 40 countries, providing financial and business advice. The consultancy firm has entrusted MádiLáncos Studio with the interior design and project management of their new office, which will be responsive, innovative and community-building. The first phase of the project, the complete renewal of the community spaces, was completed in autumn 2022.

A significant upgrade and refreshing fitout was carried out in the community spaces of the office rented in the Hegyvidék Momentum Office Building in Budapest. DLA Piper’s team worked remotely during the coronavirus, which did not reduce efficiency, but after the pandemic, the firm’s managers sought to support their staff’s return to the office. This required a modern and attractive office concept that effectively supports the new flexible working patterns and pays special attention to the needs of employees

When designing the interior of the new DLA Piper office, MádiLáncos’ designers paid close attention to the needs of the staff, with informal meeting points and collaborative spaces that offer a lighter atmosphere and a new, modern environment for colleagues to work together. The complex aim, which continues with the office and workstation refurbishments now in the second phase, was to make the workplace more attractive, increase work efficiency and motivate people to work in the office after working remotely. This was poorly achieved in the former cellular office spaces which had less attractive, not well-lit community spaces.

MádiLáncos Studio completed the interior design and coordinated the execution of the project, which was realized under the general contractor Fitout zrt, on time and within budget. Employees of the international law firm can now enjoy green and stunning community spaces, updated with spectacular design elements. Initial feedback suggests that the client’s objectives were achieved at the end of the entire fitout process: creating new motivation, designing community-building spaces and a fresh and aesthetic office space that responds to contemporary needs have resulted in an attractive alternative to working remotely

MádiLáncos Studio’s mission was to create attractive alternatives to forms of work for everyone who follows traditional working patterns by presenting the possibilities for lunch and coffee breaks, social activities and leisure that can be found in any modern office building today. The interior design has introduced new ways for the DLA Piper community to spend time together in the office space, whether it’s working in collaborative spaces, new and aesthetic office that is suited to new ways of working (e.g. online meetings) or leisure activities that build community and increase retention.

The first phase of the project focused on the creation of a new, complex community space, where staff have access to free-to-use touch-down workstations (low tables for longer and high tables for shorter periods of time), a private meeting room and a private project room, an open meeting room and lounge area, and the new work café. Eye-catching parts of the office space feature a rocking-chair relaxation corner, RS Barcelona’s design-ping-pong meeting table and a telephone booth. The office’s interactive touchscreens can be used with their own rechargeable battery, and agile interfaces support efficient working. Interactive

touchscreens can be used with their own rechargeable battery, while agile surfaces support efficient working in the office.

The collaborative space integrates many perspectives. DLA Piper’s management was keen for a multifunctional space to become the central hub of the office, bringing colleagues together at lunchtimes and coffee breaks as well as providing a more intimate, lively restaurant-café atmosphere to recharge. This is supported by a range of interior design solutions including comfortable built-in benches, community tables and a Top Brewer coffee machine built into the counter with self serving iPad interface. The private project areas can be used by teams for small or large informal discussions and meetings, and there are plenty of places in the lounge where this can be done.

In addition to the numerous innovations of the community space, biophilia was a key aspect as an organizing principle. Green islands of plants not only improve air quality, but also add an interior design element to the open, large space. The green islands are embedded in a raised floor, which also contains the irrigation system and special lighting for the mostly tropical, hydroponic plants. Grofie was MádiLáncos’ partner in green solutions. The large scale green vegetation harmonizes beautifully with natural, warm, soft tones and wood materials used by the interior designers.

The new office of DLA Piper makes the most of the location: the collaboration spaces are all connected to the ribbon window system, so employees can enjoy the view of the Buda hills. The abundance of natural light and open space, and getting out of closed, cellular offices, are all beneficial to the community. DLA Piper has responded sensitively to the needs of its employees with new community spaces based on MádiLáncos’ interior design and has introduced a modern space - a green, aesthetic and fresh environment for efficient working and the development of their community. DLA Piper’s collaboration with MádiLáncos Studio will continue: after the handover of the first phase, which can be considered a pilot project, the office floors will soon be renewed in a second phase, based on the previous lessons learned.
