Innovation at its best: the interior of Bosch Budapest Innovation Campus designed by MádiLáncos studio

An innovative and inspiring work environment: the large-scale development of the Bosch Budapest Campus, to be completed in 2022, aims to create nothing less than what Bosch envisions for the workplace of the future. In Budapest, Bosch has started to develop a complex headquarters that unites its areas of expertise and work - offices, laboratories, test areas, research and innovation areas, community spaces, conference and lecture rooms - in a single building, which not only improves the company’s efficiency, but also the brand and its retention.

The tender for the office space was won by MádiLáncos Studio in 2019. The project focused on workspace strategy and interior design, and MLS partnered with the Dutch Veldhoen + Company, the inventor of Activity Based Working.

The result of a long period of intensive work is an environmentally responsive, crisis-proof and innovative campus that joins departments, integrates office and lab work, and provides space for an innovative, project-based work organization. The Bosch Inspiring Working Conditions initiative, which builds on concepts such as trust, choice, collaboration and knowledge sharing, has provided the framework for the new corporate culture.

The development of Bosch is forward-thinking and unique in Hungary where both the client and the partners worked with exceptional dedication, openness and commitment right from the planning phase.

During the workplace strategy process before the planning, the needs of the Bosch community were assessed by MádiLáncos and the Dutch Veldhoen + Company during interviews, questionnaires, workshops; and together with the Bosch project team they conducted an analysis of the operation of a pilot office project of 1,000 square meters on a scale unique in Hungary.

Freedom of choice, space for creativity

The design of the different functions is fully in line with the company’s new work method concept, placing particular emphasis on creating collaborative and inspiring spaces for creative thinking, while the meeting rooms are equipped with the latest technology for uncompromising hybrid meetings. The roof garden and the green park surrounding the building have been built in between the work and recreation areas. The main building also includes a 500-seat auditorium equipped with conference technology; it will host professional, business and cultural events in addition to internal ones. The community space concept was developed jointly by the German and Hungarian teams.

The principle of the work organization is known as Activity Based Working, where employees and project teams can choose the most suitable conditions for their workflow from a range of different space and furniture types. The central features on each floor include larger meeting rooms, a laboratory, work cafés and a library suitable for quiet working.

Thematic office floors, based on the topic of mobility

The office levels are united by a base color code and the topic of mobility, which not only have an aesthetic function, but also allow for easy orientation on the six office floors. Besides the graphic designs created based on the central elements of cars, trains, planes, ships, spaceships and bicycles, the elements of the themes also come to life as installations.

Community and social functions, places for relaxation and informal gatherings are located on the top floor. The campus atmosphere seems almost necessary because of the location, in the industrial zone where the Bosch headquarters are located, it is not possible to go outside during working hours. The key words are variety, a sense of coziness, and the recreational features of the highly developed informal space. The campus also includes a gym, a recreation area with a music room, ping-pong tables, games room, auditorium, a multifunctional room with foosball tables and a bar, as well as yoga and relaxation rooms.

The main organizational principle of offices is the desk sharing system, where groups of desks can be reserved by project teams. A unit includes well-equipped electric height-adjustable work tables, enclosed focus rooms, project tables and informal meeting rooms. The office provides desks for 60% of its employees, but other alternative workplaces, such as

work café or library, in total offer more opportunities and work area than the number of employees.

The Bosch community started using the new campus in July 2022, they were moving in step-by-step in order to give colleagues time to explore the new functions and systems created in the office space. The building and the concept proved to be a success based on the feedback from the first months. The client’s openness and strong belief in data- and strategy-driven thinking contributed to the success, but so did the curiosity, innovation and commitment of the design partners. Bosch’s development was a partnership driven by an ambitious vision for the future.
